Privacy Policy
Mote is an air-quality app for iPhone, Apple Watch and its widgets, made by Hangzhou Nomofly Culture Media Co., Ltd. (“Nomofly”, “we”). This policy covers the app. It says what leaves your device, who receives it, and how to stop it.
The short version: Mote has no accounts and no ads, and we do not run servers that store your data. To show the air where you are, Mote sends your location to Google and Apple. When something goes wrong, the app sends a diagnostic report to Sentry. If you write to us through the app, your message goes there too.
1. Location
Mote asks for your location only while you are using it. It takes a single reading when it needs one. It does not track you continuously or in the background.
Your device’s coordinates are sent to:
- Google Air Quality API, to get current air quality, the past 24 hours and the forecast. The coordinates are sent as your device reports them, without rounding.
- Apple, to turn the same coordinates into a place name, and to show your position on the map.
Your current location and its place name are also stored on your device so the widgets can show them. If you save your current location as a city, it is stored with your saved cities (see section 2). Your location is not stored anywhere else, and we never receive it.
2. Saved cities and iCloud
The cities you save (name, coordinates, the order you put them in, and when you added them) are stored on your device. They are also stored in your own private iCloud database, so they appear on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That database belongs to your Apple Account, and we cannot read it. Mote also sends your saved cities and their latest readings to the Mote app on your paired Apple Watch.
3. City search and voice search
When you search for a city, the text you type is sent to Apple’s map search to find matching places. If you use voice search, Mote uses your microphone and Apple’s speech recognition to turn what you say into text. Apple may process that audio on its servers. We never receive your voice or your searches.
4. Crash and performance reports
We use Sentry to find and fix problems. When the app crashes, hits an error, or measures how long its work takes, it sends Sentry a report. A report contains technical details: device model, operating system version, app version, what the app was doing, and timing.
Each report also includes your IP address, so we do not call these reports anonymous. Reports do not contain your name, your Apple Account or your location. We use them only to keep the app working.
5. Feedback you send us
If you use Send Feedback in Settings, the message you write goes to the same Sentry project, so we can read it. The email field is optional. If you fill it in, it is sent with your message and your message is linked to it, so we can reply. Leave it blank and your message arrives with no contact details, apart from the IP address that every report carries.
6. What we do not do
- No sign-up, and we never ask for your name or phone number.
- No advertising, no analytics or tracking tools, and no tracking across other companies’ apps or websites.
- We do not sell or rent your data.
- We do not keep a history of where you have been.
7. Who receives data
- Google: your coordinates, for air-quality data. Google Privacy Policy
- Apple: coordinates for place names and the map, city searches, voice search audio, and iCloud sync. Apple Privacy Policy
- Sentry: crash and performance reports and feedback, including your IP address and any email address you enter. Sentry Privacy Policy
Each of these companies handles the data under its own privacy policy.
8. Keeping and deleting data
- Saved cities: swipe left on a city to delete it. The deletion reaches your other devices through iCloud.
- On your device: deleting Mote removes everything it stored on that device.
- In iCloud: deleting the app does not remove your saved cities from iCloud. Delete them in the app first, or remove Mote’s data from your iCloud storage in the Settings app.
- Reports and feedback: to have a report or a message you sent deleted, email support@nomofly.com and tell us roughly when it was sent.
9. Your choices
- Location: turn it off at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Mote. Without location, Mote cannot show the air where you are, but your saved cities still work.
- Microphone and speech recognition: turn them off in Settings → Privacy & Security. Typed search still works.
- iCloud: turn off iCloud for Mote in your Apple Account settings to stop syncing your saved cities.
- Feedback: sending feedback is always your choice, and the email field is optional.
- Crash and performance reports: the app has no switch for these. If you do not want them sent, the only way today is not to use the app.
10. Changes and contact
When the app changes what it does with data, we update this page and the date at the top.
